Disclaimer: I don't know if I mentioned this before but my posts are always written for my own personal blog first so if I write like you don't know what we do it's not personal, I'm just writing to a different audience and if you wonder why I get so specific, it is because I have had several out of state friends ask for details as their kids are in preschool and they want ideas to use. So..just thought that maybe I should let you know I am pretty much copy and pasting from my own blog and putting it here so I don't have to do double duty. There you have it. :) Enjoy!
Today FLEW by!! I had so many other activities planned that we didn't even get too, which I guess it's good. It means they had fun and were in no rush to move on to the next activity. Today we learned about the number 20 and to get things rolling, I had worksheets that had the number 20 on them. They had to use those little Valentine heart candies to fill in their worksheet. I told them if they did a really good job, they would get to take some of the candy home, BUT, they couldn't eat any while they were doing it. I was impressed. Not a one ate the candies. But when they were done I gave them some to take home and three to eat right there. They gobbled them up!
Following the introduction to the number 20, I had an activity. I had made this car track using masking tape on my carpet floor for the lines of the track/road. I then took what few car toys we had to put along the way. There was a construction zone where they had to swerve around the rocks. A big hill they had to go over (aka-a couch pillow), and then at the end used one of our Little People sets that is a parking garage/car wash. They had to start at one point and select a car out of the tin can. Each car had a number on top. They would safely take the car through the track and to the end where there was a parking lot with numbers in each stall. They had to match the number on their car to a number in the parking lot. They did really good and LOVED this activity. I thought at first that they might get crazy and just race and zoom and cut each other off but no, they were very careful drivers and the cars all made it safely to the correct parking stall. A super fun activity and one the boys truly appreciated!
Next we did a bubble activity...it went...okay. It was a bit messier than I anticipated and maybe because I had 6 kids versus just 1. AND, while we practiced blowing through our straws and NOT sucking...all three boys sucked through the straws and ended up choking on bubble solution and paint. The two survived, the other was a bit green and sick the rest of the morning-I kept waiting for him to throw up but he survived. I guess I wasn't totally prepared for that! But, despite the initial hiccup, they really liked making the bubbles super big and Henry won the biggest bubble award! He was so proud of himself. The artwork turned out pretty cool too! As the bubbles are big and blown out, you take a white sheet of paper and place it on top slowly popping the bubbles and coming down to the pan. They each turned out fun and very unique. I wish I would have remembered to have taken a picture of their completed projects but I spent awhile cleaning up. Soooo maybe not the best idea with a bunch of kids but we survived.
Then we were Size Detectives and used our hand made magnifying glass (and our eyes) to search around the house to find little cut outs that had two images on it. The kids had to determine which was smaller than the other or which was bigger than the other. They did really good with this. We also did a sorting activity where they had to cut out kids and Valentines. One side of the paper they had to glue all the kids and the other side they had to glue all the Valentines. Super easy and good way to practice sorting.
Last and this was just more for fun and to do a little science type experiment. We took milk and poured it into a shallow bowl. Next the kids got to put a few drops of food coloring. Then taking a toothpick, they first dipped in dish soap, they quickly touched the milk and instantly the colors exploded and spread out! It was SUPER COOL!!! They were all like "WHOA!" Myself included. Pretty neat how three simple household items can make something so fun! I had tested in the night before with Brandon and I was pretty giddy about it. He didn't say anything and I was like, "Oh come on! You have to admit that was pretty cool!" He just smiled and said, "Okay. It was pretty cool." I hate feeling patronized. It was cool, try it yourselves!
