The Letter D

What starts with "D"? The kids searched around the room to find a few. We sounded out the words and matched them to the pictures.
What else starts with "D"? oh yes...DANCE! The kids had a blast taking turns making music with the "drum" and "dancing"! Each time they would stop the music they would freeze on the spot.
Next we moved on to writing the letter "D". I filled little bags with white glue outlined in duct tape. The kids were able to feel as they practiced writing their letter with their fingers. I think if I do this in the future I will tape the bags to the table. They got frustrated that the bags kept bunching up and ruining their letters. We  also practiced writing in their notebooks. Next we filled in the letter "D" with "dots". They had a lot of fun with this and could have stayed there much longer! They all did such a good job!
Next we made our "ducks". I cut out a bunch of yellow squares (the shape of the month). I had them glue them on a paper plate for the ducks feathers. While they were gluing on their feathers I traced their hands for the tail feathers. Once the feathers were all glued on we folded the plates in half, and stapled the head and tail feathers on. Then they picked out googly eyes, glued on the beak, and added the feet.
We sang "Six Little Ducks" each time we counted down the missing duck would hide behind me. When all the ducks were gone,  "When the daddy duck said quack quack quack" they all came waddling back! They had so much fun with this, it couldn't have worked out any better!
OUR SIX LITTLE DUCKS!
The hit of the day was the "Dinosaur Egg" that I put on each of their chairs! I made little eggs with all their initials on them. Our theme this month was "all about me and my family". When they came to class I asked them what their name was and if they knew what letter their name started with. We found their eggs with their initials and sang a little jingle. I told them that eggs had to be kept warm so they could hatch. If they wanted their eggs to hatch they had to sit on them all through class. This worked like a charm! They did so well staying in their seats and keeping those eggs warm! At lunch they got a little crazy so I told them that the dinosaurs were almost ready to hatch, but it had to be really quiet. They all got silent! They kept shushing each other making sure they could get their eggs to hatch! After each child was done with their lunch I secretly put a little dinosaur on top of their egg. They thought it was the best thing ever! They ran over each time someone was about to get their dinosaur. It was a great hit, and something we definitely should do again!
Add a few songs, books, a few other activities, lunch, and play time and that's preschool with Miss Whitney!
*on a side note, the day was even better because my baby slept the whole three hours!
