Number 10 and Sink or Float with Miss Whitney

After the Alphabet train and our review we did the gratitude tree. Next we had our circle of praise. We sat in a circle and each child said something that they were grateful for about the person to their right. Miss Whitney joined hands and then told them something special about each one of them. Their answers were so simple and cute, "I am grateful for Henry because he is my friend." "I am grateful for Ella because she loves me". Most of the time they were more interested in swinging their arms around, but I'm pretty sure they got the gist of it.
After the circle of praise we did our gratitude bag. I filled a bag with cards of different things we should be grateful for; our house, our cars, food, clothes, Jesus, out Prophet, etc. There were also little turkeys in there. Each time a kid pulled out a turkey they said "gobble gobble" and then said something or someone specific they were grateful for.
Next up, the number 10!
We read Ten Naughty Little Monkey's and Ten Little Catepillars.
I made math necklaces to count up to ten. The kids moved the beads as they counted up to 10. I like to use mine with Taelee for adding/subtracting and counting by 10's to 100. They are kind of like a mini abacus. It also helped with hand eye coordination counting such small beads. Most of them were just excited to have a necklace to wear! ;)
Next I read them Leaves. Then we sang "Leaves are falling all around, on the rooftops on the ground. Leaves are falling on my nose, on my head and hands and toes." While I dropped a bunch of different colored shapes down. They had to collect all the "like" colors and shapes and match them up. Then I had each of them put the numbers in order from 1-10.  The kids had so much fun throwing the "leaves" in the air and catching them, we sang the song a few times!
Finding all the matches.
Lining them up and putting them in order.
Next was our sink and float activity. The kids absolutely LOVED this! I had small pictures of ten different items. The kids chose an item, then I gave them the matching picture, then they would guess if it would sink or float, and then they put it in the bowl of water to see if they were right. They glued it in the right sink or float category, and after they were all done they colored the pictures. Miss Whitney needed to go back to school because I thought a crayon and candy would float making each category an even five...I was wrong! They had much more items that sunk...I was the one being educated that day!

  1. Isabella told me all about the float game. She loved it! Such a fun idea. I didn't get the necklace...did she leave it there or did you just make one??
